INVITATION FOR THE CONTEST
OF THE HYMN AND LOGO FOR
AMERICAN MISSIONARY CONGRESS (CAM 2 - COMLA 7)

1. INTRODUCTION

The Coordination of the National Committee of Guatemala, that is preparing the celebration of the American Missionary Congress (CAM2-COMLA7) to be held on November 20 to 30 of year 2003, convokes the Episcopal Mission Commissions and the National Directors of Pontifical Mission Societies of each country of the continent, to promote the participation in the contest for the hymn and logo that will identify this magnum missionary event.

The contest for the hymn includes lyrics and music. It is the wish of the Preparatory Commission that each Particular Church of the American Continent, from their own parishes, base communities, movements and associations fill involved on this activity.

The logo as well as the hymn should reflect the spirit and the mentality that characterizes the profile of the Congress that we will like to have, the reasons that motivate it, its objectives and its thematic. It is important to remember the slogan and the attitude that is moving all this ecclesial effort; that is why we include below in more detail all this information.

2. CONGRESS OUTLINE

The American Missionary Congress CAM 2 - COMLA 7 that we want to promote, prepare and celebrate from within the Central American churches, endeavours to outline from three perspectives its identity: the communion (fellowship), so as to respond to its ecclesial nature; the mission, since it is its ultimate end; and the witness, since this perspective has profoundly marked the practice of evangelization of these churches characterized by its smallness, poverty and martyrdom.

We want a Congress that allows us to continue writing the book of the Acts of the Apostles in our Churches of the American continent of today. For this reason we want a congress:

a) THAT STRENGTHENS COMMUNION

An encounter that will be ecclesial in its preparation and celebration and that, starting from the dynamics that Pope John Paul II offers us in "The Church in America", is put into continuity and communion with past congresses. A meeting of Churches that should be a true expression of the vitality of the people of God who live on each Local Church, especially of their laity, and that will help us create ecclesial processes of communion within the different Churches of the continent. An encounter that will open to the action of the Holy Spirit, to provoke an authentic salvific event for our Churches of today.

b) THAT REVITALIZSE MISSION:

An encounter of missionary animation that, at the beginning of the new millennium, gathers the fruits of the First Evangelization of the continent and succeeds in placing the people of God in contact with its own dynamism to recreate and revitalize the mission ad gentes in the Church. A moment of grace, kairos, in which all our local Churches express themselves as agents of mission and take up the challenges that the concrete situation demands of mission.

c) THAT ANIMATES THE WITNESS:

An inculturate congress, which reflects the faces of the indigenous, the black, the peasant -campesinos, subsistent farmers-, the marginalised and all the People of God of the continent. A congress that, from poverty, littleness and martyrdom, will be Good News for everyone of the continent who experiences pain and exclusion. A congress where the witness of Christians -men and women- and the solidarity of the Churches and peoples of the continent, pushes for a new evangelization and generates a spirituality of mission and commitment of witness.

3. CONGRESS JUSTIFICATION

1. The Missionary Congress is celebrated every four years in the American continent. The last event took place in Paraná, Argentina, from September 28 to October 3rd. 1999. There, Guatemala was chosen as the site of the next American Missionary Congress 2 - Latinamerican Missionary Congress 7 (CAM2 - COMLA7), to be celebrated in November 2003. Its preparation and celebration will be the responsibility of all Local Churches of Central America.

2. The Central American Commission created for this purpose as well as the National Commission of Coordination in Guatemala, have gladly received this designation, wanting to offer their own contribution in order to respond to the call formulated by Pope John Paul II on its exhortation "Church in America" "Church in America" "The Local Churches of America are called to extend their evangelizing force beyond the frontiers of the continent. They cannot keep for themselves the immense richness of their Christian inheritance. They have to carry it to the whole world and communicate it to those who are still unacquainted with it" (EA, 74)

3. For these reasons, this Congress wants to impel, motivate and animate all Local Churches to a fuller Christian life and a renewal in and from mission. In CAM2 - COMLA7, the Churches of the continent will find the providential opportunity to initiate the New Millenium renewed on their identity and from their evangelising experience, with a clear, responsible and missionary projection, in solidarity.

4. It is wished to animate everyone: faithful laity, women and men; religious, women and men; deacons; priest and bishops; to discover in the life of their Local Churches the challenges and realities that will lead them to be more sensitive to the necessity of mission, so as to find the most effective paths to announce the Gospel of life in our Churches and beyond the confines of the American continent, "the continent of hope". From this point of view, the Congress wants to be a Kayrós of the Lord that impels and animates the universal missionary spirition the Continent.

5. The missionary spirit should be projected without fear on this new Millennium in order to respond to the challenges that the current situation of a globalized world presents to us, in order to recover the values of The First Evangelization of our peoples, over more than 500 years ago, and to rediscover their most evangelical intuitions. Likewise, it should be addressed mainly to animate mission ad gentes from the richness that, in our local Churches, is entailed in their living ecclesial communities -and animate their laity- in each moment more and more committed and missionary.

6. Each COMLA has had its own profile. We emphasize three features of CAM2 - COMLA7.
a. This Missionary American Congress of year 2003 will have its own uniqueness in the context of Smallness, Poverty and Martyrdom that characterizes the pilgrim Church of the Central America peoples. This is why this congress wants to be a privileged occasion to propose a missionary evangelization not only for and with the little ones and poor, but also from them, and at the simultaneously finds ground that has been made fertile with the blood of their martyrs of yesterday and today.

b. The CAM2 - COMLA7 wants to offer the possibility that the ethnic diversity, and, in general, all the indigenous, afro-americans and the most excluded of the continent, have the opportunity to show us their faces: the expression of their pain and hope, and a proper space to attain a more fertile dialogue that animates decidedly the the inculturation of the Gospel from a missionary perspective.

c. Central America is the heart of the American continent and the bridge bridge that unites North America with South America. For this reason, the realisation of the Congress in Guatemala, is an opportunity so that the local Churches of the continent favour communion and effective solidarity, not only of the Central American and Caribbean countries and people, but of the entire continent from Canada to Patagonia. Likewise, the Congress should be an opportunity to suggest joint pastoral and life pathsways in order to pay attention to the complex phenomena of human migration, which as much challenges the eclessial communities as it does the majority of the peoples of our continent.
7. Very aware of the need of the grace of the Holy Spirit, we ask the prayers of everyone, especially of those -men and women- that from their contemplative life, unite us more with God. In communion with all martyrs of the faith, witness of the kingdom in our lands; with all the Saints - men and women - of the Continent, we trust the CAM2 - COMLA7 to the maternal protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of America.
